Special counsel Jack Smith widens election probe; focus on fundraising, voting equipment breaches

Special counsel Jack Smith is continuing the investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 election, a month after indicting Donald Trump for conspiring to discount legitimate votes and subvert the results of the 2020 presidential election.

This widening of the probe suggests that others may still face legal consequences.

Smith is currently focusing on how money raised based on unfounded claims of voter fraud was used to fund attempts to breach voting equipment in several swing states won by Joe Biden.

Former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell's role in these efforts is under scrutiny. Records indicate that Powell’s nonprofit organization, Defending the Republic, hired forensics firms that illegally accessed voting equipment in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Arizona.

Powell is also facing criminal charges in Georgia related to her involvement in a multi-state plot to illegally access voting systems after the 2020 election. Powell has pleaded not guilty to these charges.
