President Joe Biden’s campaign held a press conference outside Donald Trump’s New York City criminal hush money trial. Robert De Niro and two former police officers, who defended the Capitol on January 6, spoke at the event.
Former Washington DC police officer, Michael Fanone, who was beaten by the former president’s supporters on January 6, emphasized the violence of Jan 6 and the threat to democracy.
"I came here today to remind Americans of what Donald Trump is capable of and the violence that he unleashed on all of Americans on Jan. 6, 2021," Fanone said.
Harry Dunn, another former DC police officer who was attacked at the January 6th riot, said, "Donald Trump is the greatest threat to our democracy and the safety of communities across the country today. We've been called traitors, just today. We were all called traitors on Jan. 6 for doing our job."
Robert De Niro reiterated their message.
“I love this city. I don’t want to see it destroyed,” De Niro told reporters. “Donald Trump wants to destroy not only this city but also the country, and eventually, he could destroy the world.”
A senior adviser emphasized that their presence wasn’t to discuss the trial but to leverage the significant media attention surrounding the legal proceedings to redirect attention in the presidential race to the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection.
“We’re not here today because of what’s going on over there,” stated Biden campaign communication director Michael Tyler, gesturing towards the courthouse. “We’re here today because you all are here.”
