Federal Investigation into Trump's Involvement with January 6th Attack
On August 1, 2023, a federal grand jury indicted Donald Trump of 4 counts of criminal felonies. Trump was arraigned in Federal Court in Washington, D.C. at 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 3. The charges revolve around Trump’s and 6 unnamed co-conspirators’ efforts to interfere with the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Because of the Department of Justice has a longstanding policy prohibiting the prosecution of a sitting president, the case was dropped after Trump's November 2024 election. However, the Department of Justice still released its final report on January 14th, 2025, which details the case they built against Trump and their confidence that it would have secured a felony conviction by a jury.
